Why “On Your Left”?
When I think of my leadership style, this photo of me coxing a crew down the 2009 Head of the Charles Race comes to mind. In rowing, the coxswain is the trusted leader, coach, steerer, and motivator in the boat. They are also the only person facing forward: they can see and sense all factors contributing to the boat’s effectiveness and must synthesize these with a sense of calm confidence to guide the crew. All members of the boat must trust their vision, guidance, pacing, and coaching to succeed.
In long-distance rowing races boats start at different intervals, so a win isn’t calculated by who finishes first. Ensuring that you finish fast necessitates strategic passing. A pass from the right side is still a pass, but taking the wider angle adds time and frustration. Putting that much exertion into something that barely pulls you ahead is a recipe for that crew to then pass you. Which is not only detrimental to your standing but psychologically defeating to the crew.
You need to be confident in your foundational base pace and the connection of the crew to successfully make that inside pass. Once you’re ready, you call on your crew to dial-in and drive hard to propel through the crew ahead and use the momentum from the overtake to catapult you onward at a new level of speed and--if done right--flow.
In crew, this isn’t a polite overtaking. When your boat’s bow overlaps their stern and the coxswain is confident that you’ll make the pass, she demands that the other coxswain yield for the safety of both boats: she shouts “ON YOUR LEFT”. These three commanding words say it all “you’ve had your moment in the sun. We dialed in to build our baseline pace and caught up to you. And now it’s time to pass and leave you in the dust.”*
On Your Left Strategy follows this approach as an analogy for building strong brands and businesses: take stock of the competitive set and make a strong gameplan--with an openness to pivot and adapt, then keep your head in the boat. Focus on ironing out the kinks, establishing a strong base pace, while honing and elevating your strongsuits. We don’t sprint for the first, easy win. We have the patience to lay the groundwork knowing that it’ll become the base we need to propel forward and disrupt. We recognize that flow feels differently for each team at varying moments and experiment until we’ve found the winning combination of components and tactics that meets the moment of your category.
